The Kachwaha Rajput dynasty’s royal crematorium is located near Gatore Ki Chhatriyan, Jaipur, at the base of Nahargarh Fort. Established in the early 1700s by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, this serene location is a tribute to the splendour and architectural genius of the Rajput era. The Hindi expression “Gaye ka thor,” which refers to the final resting place of departed souls, is said to be the source of the word “Gatore.”
The location is home to exquisitely made cenotaphs (chhatris) honouring several Kachwaha kings. Each cenotaph is distinct in design and captures the essence of the king it honours. These chhatris, which are decorated with elaborate carvings, delicate paintings, and fine latticework, combine ancient Hindu and Mughal architectural forms. The cenotaphs of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II and Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II are two of the most famous; they are renowned for their exquisite marble work and complex designs.
